The Challenge of Preaching Absolute Truth

What A Challenge!

The challenge of preaching absolute truth is a bit obvious, isn’t it?  How do we make pronouncements about sin?  How do we proclaim that Jesus is the unique God-Man?  Or what about talking about the inerrancy of Scripture?

Ironically, people are willing for us to share our opinions about these topics.  But they feel that what they believe about these things are as legitimate as what you say.  But consider this: we represent the one who said that He is the Way, He is the Truth, He is the Life!

An Example of Preaching Absolute Truth

About a year ago I ran into this reality.  I continue to teach for Christian Leaders Institute.  One of the most challenging courses I have ever created is one on Spiritual Warfare.  I experienced a great deal of spiritual warfare in the process of creating the class, and was thrilled when it finally went online.  To my surprise, someone who went through the class contacted CLI expressing great criticism of one section of the class where I listed cults that were active in a spiritually challenged city.  Among those I listed was the Mormons.

The man writing had grown up as a Mormon, and knew many of them yet.  He was offended by my lumping them with other unbiblical groups.  They were such good people!

I replied with a lengthy email about where the beliefs of the Latter Day Saints differed with the Bible.

We engaged in a discussion via email.  He attacked me personally, and indicated that he would not engage with CLI anymore, either.  We were so intolerant!   Who did I think I was to believe that my truth was the right truth?

Eventually I blocked him and cut off contact.

A couple of months ago he contacted me again through CLI.  He said that he had experienced a change in his thoughts and attitudes.  He apologized for the way he had communicated with me, and said that now his beliefs more closely aligned with Scripture and that he was growing in it.

Conclusion

I don’t know what events happened to bring about his change of attitude and beliefs.  I do recognize in his story the work of the Holy Spirit.

That is my hope as I face the challenge of preaching absolute truth in a world that doesn’t believe it.  God is at work in the hearts and minds of people and brings them into conviction.  I can’t do it.  You can’t either.   So, I pray when I am going to preach that there will be something at work that will be greater than my elocution or presentation.
