Preaching That Jesus Is On His Throne

Preaching That Jesus Is On His Throne

We continue in this post the theme of doctrinal preaching.  The next phrase in the Apostles’ Creed is this that Jesus ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father.  Jesus is on the throne.  He is ruling!  This is a subject worthy of a great sermon.  Here are some thoughts about how to go about that.

Preaching That Jesus Is On The Throne Positively

There are times when we wonder, aren’t there?  If Jesus is on the throne, that means that anything is possible.  All the power of God is available for us in times of need!  The Bible tells us in the Old and the New Testaments that nothing is impossible for God.  Think of the angel appearing to Mary, as recorded in Luke 1.  The angel tells this young girl that she is going to become pregnant, and that the child born will be the long awaited Messiah.  Note Mary’s response, and the angel’s answer.

The Evidence For God’s Omnipotence

34 Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’[c] 35 The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born[d] will be holy; he will be called Son of God. 36 And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.’

Jeremiah is not my favorite prophet.  Often called “The weeping prophet”, his prophecy is a negative warning about continued disobedience of God’s people.  Yet, when Jeremiah buys a field as the evidence that God will bring back His people to the promised land, he breaks out in praise:

17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

Jesus also claims omnipotence when he says that it is difficult for a rich man to experience salvation.  In fact, camels fitting through the eyes of needles are more possible.  The disciples react with amazement.  Salvation must be impossible, they assume.

Matthew 19:26“With man this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”

The impossible becomes possible because Jesus is on the throne.  The power of God can flow through Jesus to the Holy Spirit, to us in our difficult situations.

Praying Boldly to a Reigning Lord

What does this mean for our daily lives?  It means that we can and should pray boldly.  Pray for healing.   Ask God to stop wars.  Plead  for the building of God’s kingdom in this world, for God’s will to be the rule of the day.  Who knows which bold prayers will become the channel of God’s power into a needy world?

Of course, there is the reality that God does no answer all of our prayers the way we would like.   That is another part of the message that we will explore in the next post.  But even then, preaching that Jesus is on the throne will impact our faith.

Conclusion

I think it is appropriate to end this post with a few moments of worship.  Connect with this link to join a choir in rejoicing that Jesus is on his throne.
